    DNA Explained Mitochondrial DNA
is the fact that this DNA is maternally inherited. Males and females inherit a copy of MtDNA from their mother. Nuclear DNA, on the other hand, is inherited equally from both parents; a child will inherit 50% of their nuclear DNA from the mother and the other 50% from their father.
A MtDNA copy is passed down entirely unchanged, through the maternal line. Males cannot pass their MtDNA to their offspring although they inherit a copy of it from their mother.

  • Notes
    • Resume of Emily Josephine Cruickshank by another researcher

Emily Josephine Cruickshank was first married to Henry Redding from Wales (occupation miner). At some point Henry "went north to the Yukon" per Velma-and never returned. I don't know if he died or was declared dead when he didn't come back--but Emily ended up marrying a second husband named "E.F. Allen". This is borne out by the birth registration records for Emily's daughter Christina May. This record is dated Dec. 1905--but it lists Christina's bith date as 4/29/1894. Under "name of father" is listed "Henry Redding", and then "adopted by E.F. Allen". Emily is listed as the informant on this "birth" record--and she signs her name "Emily Cruickshank Allen". I can only guess that Emily may have re-registered Christina's birth at the time of her adoption by the second husband. Anyway--Christina May's daughter/Emily's granddaughter Edna May was raised in Illinois, and married Eugene Morton Hodgson Jr. in 1936. They had 2 daughters: Anne Elizabeth Hodgson (my mother) in 1940, and Susan Clayton Hodgson in 1942. Each daughter married and had a daughter--Anne had me, and Aunt Susan had my cousin Harper Elizabeth Steele, who lives in California. Sadly, both of Edna's daughters died young. Aunt Susan died at age 40 of breast cancer, and my mother died at age 54 of ovarian cancer. I
