  • Notes
    • Ann is a twin to her brother Tom. Anne's birth was registered by her mother who at that time was living at 239 Montford Ave., Rutherglen. Her father at that time was in the Royal Navy [WW2] and gave his occupation as an Engineer Mechanic.
Anne was the eldest twin being born half an hour before her brother Tom.

Following illness at the age of 7, Anne developed epilepsy and spent many years in and out of various hospitals and institutions - namely, Bridge of Weir, Renfrewhire, and Lennox Castle Hospital, Stirlingshire, the latter being the place of her death - cause. She was in Villa 8 of Lennox Castle Hospital.
spontaneous epilepsy and pneumonia. Sadly around 1947 drugs to control epilepsy was still being discovered and phenobarbitone was still very new and not as stable as it is today.

Email received from Archivist and Records Manager for National Health Service Greater Glasgow states
"the register of deaths occuring at Lennox Castle shows that your sister died there at the age of 21 (dod 23/2/1962), having been admitted on 20 Jan 1959. The cause of death is given as "Status Epilepticus". No post mortem was carried out. The female patients visitors book shows that she received visits from a grandmother (Mrs. Delaney), your parents (i.e. John and Jean Nelson), a brother (Neil) and 3 sisters (not correct) - Miss Nelson (immediate sister) Mrs. Falmain and Mrs. Foster (latter 2 were NOT SISTERS ?who were they). We have no case notes, nor any other records; that is all there is.

    • Ann was admitted to Dykebar Hospital on 24th Oct 1958 and then to Lennox Castle Hospital on January 1959 (as per mother's notes)

Dykebar Hospital opened in 1909 as the Renfrew District Lunatic Asylum. In 1948 it joined the National Health Service under the Renfrewshire Mental Hospitals Board of Management (renamed the Dykebar & Associated Hospitals Board of Management in 1964). From 1968-1974 it was under the Paisley and District Hospitals Board of Management. At the reorganisation of 1974 it passed to the Renfrew District of the new Argyll and Clyde Health Board.
